A History Embroidered in Tapestry.
The Petit Point of tapestry needle-worked is closely related to a character
of the French history as to particular patrimonial places.
It is indeed Madam de Maintenon, wife of Louis the Great, who has linked her
name with this decorative art.
This stitch of tapestry was taught to the noble girls of her time. For their
education Madam de Maintenon
asked Louis XIV to put up the money for a school. After standing few years to
Choisy le Roi, the school at last got settled, in Saint Cyr, a small village
close to Versailles.
Louis XIVth also offered to Mrs Scaron (name whom she held from its first
marriage with this famous writer) a castle at Maintenon in the Eure valley
(about twenty miles from Versailles). The King to this occasion conferred her the
marchioness title of nobility. Since then she will bear the title of
Marchioness of Maintenon.
These are thus the bonds that form the Petit Point between these characters and
the places which they lived that, with the words, we propose to embroider for
you a tapestry.
